The First oil service was at 7714miles.. Took here in for a rear rattle, service guy looked and said.. "you are about due an oil service, we do that too"... ("3000" on the start up count down).. and did the oil and Urea... now 9000 miles later.. the urea is low and 2500 on the start up count down

Goes in tomorrow

Well that explains the early Oil Service at under 8,000 miles and probably explains the current DEF warning too. Two 2.5 gallon bottles of 83-19-440-158 will NOT fill both tanks (assuming they did a full flush and fill). 5 gals is only a Little more than it takes to fill just the larger 'passive' tank.

I'd carry that paper work with me and point out that they 'owe' you at least one gallon of DEF to complete the previous DEF replenishment. IIRC your X5 sends your dealer a message at about 1K to go. So a gallon of DEF will probably get you to within the window for your next conditions based oil service. If they want to charge you. Go to a VW dealer and get a gallon in the fancy no spill bottle for $6 and top it up yourself.

So yesterday I had my first oil service at 8727 miles-- I thought BMW changed their policy about annual low mileage oil changes (i.e., wait until CBS notes the mileage--I was still at around a 2500 count down & the time--Sept was one year since delivery).

I never had any issues with DEF warnings, but I did remind them to top off both DEF tanks. My invoice looks identical to the invoice noted above. My question relates to the amount of DEf needed now that it is just a top off rather than a flush and fill. Are 2-2.5 gals enough until the next oil service? Also, how do the techs know how much to top off--there isn't a measure or is there? I was pissed when I opened the hood and found DEF residue stains throughout the engine bay and also some on my front bumper and headlight. I wiped it off immediately! I always tell the dealer never to wash my cars, so perhaps I would not have seen it had they washed it. But still, why wouldn't the tech clean up any spilt DEF Isn't it highly corrosive?

It is not highly corrosive, it is relatively safe. It is corrosive to copper and brass.
