I have a 2010 with hitch installed at PDC (as close to factory installed as you can get), haven't towed anything yet, but definitely did not notice this "zoom" view. Will go check the car and report back.

UPDATE: I checked my car and it does not offer the zoom function or the lines shown above when in back view. Anyone think this could be an M-only function? Is there any way to actually check if your car has the hitch programming without plugging a trailer in? I don't have one handy - but there must be a screen that shows a list of programming installed, right?

Don't know about '10 but on my '09 I just push down on the knob when the camera is on and it gives me the zoom function even without the trailer plugged in (since you need it to back up to the trailer)

Just looked at the '10 manual online and it looks like you guys should have a screen that shows the vehicle and some options on the left. The screen shows a little hitch looking thing towards the bottom of the list. Pg 87. I hope that is your answer.

i have an '08 X5 and did not have the hitch installed from the factory, and did not have the zoom function on the camera.
When i recently installed the hitch and harness, i had to have the dealer program the harness, and the zoom feature now appears.
It is something with the programing, or the software version that your particular truck has.
this feature makes backing up to the motorhome a peice of cake.
Right on everytime

I may have to check with my dealer to see if the PDC remembered to do the programming. I don't have a trailer to test with right now, and I don't know how to check iDrive to see if it is in there. Would like to know before hooking something up...

Does anyone know how to check idrive to see what is installed?

You really don't need a trailer to check if you have the feature. Pg 87 in your manual shows a pics of something that looks like a hitch. If you have it then it should change your camera view. That's more than we got. I had you figure it out on my own for my 09. The book says nothing and the dealer thought I was crazy and told me the function didn't exist.

Let me restate - I need a trailer to plug in to see if my car has the programming that goes with hitch and wiring harness. If not installed, the programming for the zoom on the backup camera is only a "small" problem, but the programming for the hitch wiring is a "big" problem. If not there, then brake lights on a trailer may not light, among other things I believe with the stability control.

I drove down to the storage place where my boat is kept yesterday and although I don't have the zoom function, all my trailer lights worked as expected - running lights, brake lights, blinkers.

that is heartening - I wonder why some people have the idrive zoom function and some don't - even if it doesn't there is a problem with my hitch programming...
