Keeping a pack of cheap terry cloth towels in the car can also come in handy for grabbing the handle and wiping up any mess. Just be sure to throw the towel away rather than keeping it to avoid the fumes.

I like the cheap, cotton gloves sold in gardening shops as a means of keeping diesel off your hands and hence the steering wheel, etc. I presume they are available in North America. Once they get soiled I just dispose of them.

As for biodiesel, not in my X...

Or is it fine to switch back and forth at will?....
In most states the diesel sold at truck stops with the large filler nozzles is ULSD #2, just like the diesel sold for passenger vehicles with the smaller filler nozzle. So you can switch back and forth at will as long as the pump says it is ULSD. BUT... you probably don't want to unless it is an emergency. Those truck stops pumps have large nozzles for a reason -- high flow rates -- and your little plastic funnel restricts the flow dramatically. So unless you are very careful you will get diesel all over you and your X5

FWIW the best use of the little funnel is for 'fixing' the end of a small diesel nozzle that has been bunged up enough to not trigger the little catches that allow it to fit into the tank past the gas nozzle filler blocker. That blocker is released when BOTH small catches are pressed at the same time. And BMW set those catches at the top and bottom of the opening. Of course this is exactly where the soft alloy ends of the small diesel nozzels get bent in when people drop them or bang them into the pump nozzle holder, etc. So every once in a while you will have trouble inserting even the proper size nozzle. This can be 'fixed' by using the little plastic funnel to release the blocker catches OR you can just rotate the nozzle about 45 degrees before you attempt inserting it into your X5's tank.

There we go....

I can take my other diesel to a truck stop and fill 25 gallons in a minute, easy.

Random Question: When I was in Germany I filled a 118D the gas pump had what looked like a little fan that moved the fuel through the hose to the nozzle... Do they use those here? I noticed that it definately pumped slower. The only experience I have in the states is being a mess after filling up a delivery truck at my work once... It fizzed out the pipe and made everything smell awful.
