Go to a station that keeps heir equipment clean. Use a paper towel to wipe off your hands or keep a handi wipe in the glove box and wipe off your hands.

I filled up for the 3rd time this morning. Mobil station in Boston suburb. $2.99 per gallon. I grabbed a nitrile glove from the garage on my way out the door, and although the pump handle was on the cleaner side, I had no problem with any diesel smell on my hand after discarding the glove.

I posted earlier that I was contemplating the use of a pair of leather gloves stored in the rear, yet these will retain small amounts of diesel, and the cabin will smell pretty bad. The nitrile gloves are easy, come in a plastic pop out container (like cleaning wipes) and can be purchased at any auto parts store.

It was 30 degrees this AM, and the wind across the hand was a bit chilly, so it will be fun in a month or so when the temp dips a bit more. I put in 25.74 gallons, and the average fuel economy is at 25.8 MPG. First 958 miles from Spartenburg was at 27.6, and the last tank was more intercity driving in Boston.

FWIW Costco sells grey nitrile "exam gloves". You get two large boxes, with 150 gloves each. They are very good quality: thin but tough. I use them for working on cars, painting, etc.. We keep a Ziplock bag with several in each vehicle.

But we have found that the pump handles at most of the stations where we buy diesel are clean enough that we almost never use them for fill ups.

I filled up for the second time last night. The ground had a few large areas of diesel, but the handle was fairly clean. I still used a paper towel from a dispenser right next to the pump. I had no smell or residue on my hand. It was 29 degrees! (It's 14 right now!)

bigx5er, I'm happy to see you've decided to go with the diesel. My only bit of advice, tho, is if this is for your wife, SHE must be the one to decide which vehicle she drives. I know this from first-hand experience! I'm easily swayed, then I wish I had something else. Last car was my 535, which my husband really wanted. It's a great car. But it was going to be my car, and I really wanted more space. Sure enough, a year later I got my X I'm happy now.

Just store your leather gloves in a one gallon zip lock bag in the back of your vehicle... Sam's Club also sells exam gloves as well as Costco...

The good news is I am the driver of the X5. She picks her cars or else I'd look like Tiger Woods.

My personal experience was that diligence of maintenance on the diesel was of greater importance ie, fuel filter. Lots of the folks in the TDI club replaced their VW filter with a Caterpillar filter as it was " heavier duty" and could last 1-2 years. You also bring up a point with the cetane value. All diesel fuel is not created equally, especially when the US went to ultra low emissions fuel. Finding a local, high quality diesel supplier was a primary concern, but I found that the local Hess station was fairly good, though it didnt have diesel fuel at the same pumps as gas so you could spend time waiting behind tractors to fill up before you got a turn.

I guess the OP has already decided that he's sticking with "dino" fuel as it's known in the diesel world. Probably a good choice if you arent used to the quirks and pet peeves of the diesel world.

did you say 25.74 gallons? Is the diesel tank bigger than gasoline?
