Well I got a crack in my windshield not too long ago (3 weeks ago). So I asked BMW for a quote to get my windshield replaced and it was $1,100.00. Ouch I know, but with my normal instincts I just went with Safelite. I have used them for my past cars (Lexus and Nissan) and have never complained about the work they did. Safelite quoted me $310 after taxes
However I used them last week and it was horrendous unacceptable work. They messed up my engine bay compartment and the insulation lining that has the rubber on top of the plastic broke off. The service tech told me it was because of the suspension going out (this is a 2007 E70, i laughed and cried inside). He then forward to use screws to screw in this certain part of the car where a piece of plastic blocks all the rain water from the engine bay. So he did the water test to see if water would leak to the engine compartment, and it leaked after all that screwing. It began to rain and it rained hard. He asked what I would like to pay with, and of course I insisted we go to the main headquarter of Safelite in my area and figure out all this mess. I immediately went to BMW instead and my service advisor gave that omgwtfbbq look. I asked them to give me a repair quote so I could just give it to Safelite and make them reimburse me for the repair. When I brought it to Safelite they insisted they would order the parts for me and replace the broken parts out of their own pocket even though they say they didn't cause it . At that point I was like fml should've paid $1100. Well Safelite took out the difference from the repair invoice that BMW printed and deducted from the windshield replacement cost. I was fine with that but now I haven't had my car since Thursday ![]() gosh i hate cars sometimes. |

I've had mine replaced twice already (by the dealer) between 1100 and 1200 both times. In my case insurance only covered about a third of it. (they did a great job both times.)

I went right to BMW (and paid the price,) but because I had the rain sensor and the HUD, I did not want any problems. Good luck with yours!

I had mine replaced by Safelite because I was in Bellingham, WA where I was getting a new rock every two months or so. I didn't want to keep replacing WSs at $1100 a pop - sooner or later my insurance company ($0 deductible) would get me. Luckily, I got back home without needing another. If/when I need to replace it again I will go with the BMW glass if I can find a decent price. If not, it will be back to Safelite or some other company who has ‘flat’ glass.
Safelite replaced it and had to try to repair it once because the header seal on their version of the glass whistled. I did not pay all this money for a car that was not quiet. So, they ripped the whistler out and replaced it with a unit that had the BMW designed header strip. It is quiet now. No problems ever with any sensor. I will say this though, their glass is awfully wavy. It is not a optical problem. But it sure looks odd when you look across the hood. As for BMW glass prices. I had my WS replaced a year ago in Wilmington, NC and it only cost $580 there. I don't know what has happened within the last year to make the price double. My guess is that the new X5s do not use the same glass and therefore there are not as many made anymore so BMW is jacking the prices - and the customers. Same seems to be true for the 19" Diamaras tires (now $369) a pop.

I would advise to never use safelite. At least with my experience, they dont do good work and dont care about the quality of their work. When my windshield on the X needed to be replaced I asked the BMW dealership who for a recommendation and they sent me to a guy who only does luxury cars. Very professional and did a great job replacing the glass. Safelite replaced the drivers side window on my moms car. Terrible work. The glass never has fitted properly since and it is all oem.

^ well I've used Safelite 3 times all with good results and good pricing, so your mileage may vary by location perhaps.

Just curious, if it's a known problem, can't you get the full glass insurance coverage? I think mine only increased my insurance by about $80/year
