My guess would be at the next major re-design, i.e. 2013 model.

Without technology to lend a hand I use the BGE mirror setting. Works great although you'll have to wait until 2013 or so for night vision.

I hope they never get blind spot assist. People have been turning the heads and still missing people on motorcycles for years, I HIGHLY doubt a little light on your side mirrors is gonna make you see me anymore.

This is like the lawyer suing the BMW dealership because he backed up and hit something and is blaiming improper adjustment of the backup camera. When did we become so damn lazy that we can't turn our damn heads?

I too hope the technology never arrives on the X5. The last thing we need is more football moms relying on this kind of stuff to drive. As if the backup camera wasn't enough of a sin.

As an avid motorcyclist for more than 40 years, I would love to see cars have blind spot assist on vehicles. Frankly, there are a lot of older people out there who simply cannot turn their heads that much, and others too lazy to turn their heads. Having a warning light sure won't hurt, and it might help. The easier they marke it to drive safely, the more likely people will do it.

The blind spot assist is more accurate than a some tired lazy driver driving in dark and hitting someone because he was not paying attention. I use the LDW and its very accurate and vibrates the steering when I go over the lane.

I understand your other view of them, but I just can't agree unless it's documented and proven that they're being tested to ensure that it's sensitive enough for motorcycles also. I'm guessing there is a fine line between detecting a motorcycle and a car, and if they sensor is cranked up too much in order to detect a motorcycle that it might overreact and see a car that is in the other lane like it normally would be, so by default it's set to be less sensitive.

As for the older people, that's a whole different soapbox. If they can't turn their heads, should they really be driving period? I think more technology makes people more complacent and frees them up to do other things..texting, talking on the phone/passengers, etc. People become reliant on these techonologies, which I think in turn causes less driving skills as a whole. After taking a driving school w/ the Porsche and BMW CCA, I still find it ammusing that people adjust their side mirrors to see the cars behind them instead of using them more for blindspot checks. We don't need three mirrors to see the same car behind us.

There;s how things should be, and how things are. I doubt that the inability to rotate your neck 90 degrees will ever be a reason to take someone's driving license away, considering the difficulty in living without a vehicle in most of the country.

As for blind spot assist, you might find this of interest:
