iPod adapter fix not covered under Warranty !!

Long story short, got a quote for $260 from a local dealer! $56 for accessory and $190 for programming. Called bmwna and got a lame response from them. Definitely good cop bad cop going on here. bmwna opened a case for me but I am not hopeful. Any other suggestions? I know I can get a voltage correction adapter for about $30 but I really think this ought to be covered under warranty. I use a 3GS iPhone.

I haven't been checking all the threads lately but have something wacky going on w/my iPod adapter too so started reading your thread. I am confused though... what are you talking about?

The supplied adapter gives you a warning when you connect a 3GS iPhone. The message says something like charging is not supported and gives you an option to put the phone in airplane mode. Say no and you will be able to control the music through the stereo. However the iPhone won't charge. The issue is that 3GS phones switched from 12v charge pins to 5V and old adapters no longer charge them. I need a fix for the voltage correction. Several people have reported that they managed to get the fix from their dealers without having to pay for any accessory or programming.

Oh I see, thanks for explanation. Well, that sounds more complicated than my problem. My problem is that the iPod connector on the Y iPod->1/8" jack + USB seems flaky... not sure how that's possible but it just doesn't work right... I tried it on 3 iPods and one iPod's connector is messed up internally, so that doesn't count, but in case of the other two the sound starts oscillating from left to right at times, or just goes to one side and I have to jiggle the iPod/connector to get it to normal. If I just ty a regular original Apple iPod connector->USB It plays fine w/no distortions or sounds weirdness... but I don't get the full "integration" effect and the iPod control is awkward through iDrive. The connector looks ok though just as if it were cheaply made or something and slightly off in size or fit so all the connections are not always good or something... very weird...

try calling ahead and seeif they let you try one of the dealer's adapters. If it works, then it should be a simple replacement order. Sounds like a warranty issue.

I have a 2009 and a 3gs. The dealer said that iPhones are not guaranteed to work but iPods are. My car did not want to communicate with the readers when I had a check engine light so they ended up reprogramming it last month in order to diagnose the air temp sensor. After that, my Y cable and the one they ended up giving me charge my iPhone. Hope this helps.

What if your idrive constantly kept crashing?? Then maybe they would have to update the software on the car.......

I have a 2010 and also purchased the combo adapter. With my 3GS I get the same warnings. I actually had one of the adapters, and it doesn't help. This is quite unusual as the adapter works with any other plug I had trouble with in the past.

BMW needs to update their cables. Bottom line. I have found that their technology in general is a little behind the times, coming from a Lexus. The new Lexus RX has bluetooth audio!

I have a case with bmwusa. I will update you when I hear back from them. Now I am wondering I may have screwed up my relationship with the service department at this dealer. It doesn't exactly foster trust between customer and dealer when you go to the manufacturer for help

Pocketdoc, Did you end up paying for any of the work they did? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry about your relationship with the dealor. Their job is to help you. They will not mind, as you are helping them to solve a prolem.

I paid for the cable, but no longer use it. I just use my iPhone as an iPod attached to the headphone jack. I charge it with a standard cig lighter adapter.

Oh, I wish they had BT audio....

Thanks. I know we have a number of options. I like the flexibility. You could also charge your iPhone using its own stock usb cord connected to the ipod usb port or the one in the glove box. They have done a good job especially when you combine the premium sound and iPod integration features but they are spoiling the experience by saving a few bucks. The old iPod adapters should have been discarded. Apple gave vendors plenty of warning.
