Or a DIPSTICK or directly visible fill line on the reservoir... I am SO annoyed by adding a sensor and software into the measurement process for ANYTHING...just something else to 'not work'.

I started this thread. Today I started it up and the warning is no longer there. So now I am one of those that had the warning come up and then went away. I have not had time to call the service advisor at the nearby dealer (since I bought mine out of town), but I may do so this afternoon. I do not want to be stuck during the holidays.

The sensor discussion is interesting. Did the sensor problem just show up as the fluid running low or did another warning come up that was specific to the sensor?

Well, our X5 gave us the exhaust fluid message today at only 1000 miles. It is also going in for screeching brakes and transmission issues. We've been told we can't get it back today, but at least my dad gets a 328xi loaner to drive around!

So my DEF light went on at 2400 miles.....and now at 2650 it says I have 800 miles to no start. So while at the BMW dealer this afternoon, I wandered over to the service desk to ask what they think I should do.

After I got thru the blank looks, they finally got the service manager out, and he indicated that it was normal, and DEF is used much more frequently when the weather is cold. He said that there was a page in the owner's manual that referenced this. I can't recall what it says.

I indicateed that I heard there were some issues on sensors, etc. and he didn't know, but to bring it in.

I asked if DEF was considered normal maintenance, as it was to be repleneshed at oil drain interval, and he said that it wasn't included between top off's.

So I'm going in next week to see what they have to say after looking at the tanks. I think, the tanks weren't completely filled at PCD last month. I can't imagine that I've used 6 gallons of fluid yet. That would be at just under a 6% usage rate.

I didn't tell the Service MGR. that I work for Cummins, and sell DEF, and that I probably know more about the emission side of his business.......so we'll let his crew figure this out for themselves. I'll report back after the 30th.

I don't know where these dealers come up with this crap? I've had mine for a year and it gets cold here . I've never seen the low DEF message.
