I beg your pardon for asking, but..

How EXACTLY do you remove the iDrive knob? Does it just pull right off with a little effort? (and go back on the same way?)

You can use a plastic putty spatula to pop it off with a bit of force. My first time around, I thought I was about to break the knob off with the force I put on it.
