iPhone 3G, 3Gs, ipod nano, all don't talk to USB/iDrive

when you plug the device in (USB port inside the center console), the iDrive status for the external device says "reading...", but then reverts back to the default status message of nothing connected after 15 seconds.

This is using the factory iPod/iPhone cable. Will take into the dealer and report back on what the problem is. This is on a brand new 2010 X35d.

Any ideas?

Um I am not sure this will help, but are you sure you have the Ipod/Iphone connector/dongle? I plugged in USB Thumb drives with music and it was able to play them. I have not tried my Iphone or one of my Ipod's because I don't have the dongle. For now we are just using a male-to-male headphone cable to play off our Ipod/Iphone/MP3 players. One thing I did like was when connecting our Iphone via Blue-tooth it pulled across the Address Book in the phone. Other PDA phones worked but they didn't pull across those Address books...

hi, thanks for the response.

I am mos def using the iPhone dongle... we can play the music just by hooking up the analog music connector up to the Aux input, but then we have to manually control the iPhone/iPod... the USB connection is what gives us the iDrive control that we want.

BTW, all these same ipod/iphone that don't work in the 2010 x5, all work just fine in my 09 M3. Go figure. I think there is a firmware problem in the X5, because the charging does work fine with all these devices from the USB connector, and like I said, the X5 tries to read the device, but ends up failing to complete the 'connection'.

might be a loose connection or buggy software --- I had a 24 hour period where the 2010 x5 would not recognize my iphone (or my wife's) plugged into the snap-in adaptor. Worked fine with the y cable, though. I tried removing an reinstalling the snap-in adaptor a couple times. Tried shutting off car (e.g. locking car and walking away in a huff for an hour) and coming back. Problem went away the next day.

In the past month, I have had the: 1) urea needs replenishing warning at 1000 miles and above freezing weather (went away on restart); 2) iphone connection failed for 24 hours (went away the next day); and check engine light at 2000 miles (went away after letting car sit and a restart) - so this could just be infamous BMW gremlins...

i have not used the snap-in adapter... didn't want to spring for the iPhone bracket.
Will try the y-cable again over the weekend while I wait to make an appt at BMW dealer.

So far at 300 miles on the 35d, we are pleased with the experience. The motor, just like my M3 motor, is really an excellent piece of engineering.

tzo,

BMW has continued to update the Y-adapter.
1. There was 61120440645 until late 2007.
2. Then 61120440796 in late 2007 (which I have in my 2008 X5 built in Oct '07). This has worked fine with multiple iPods and my iPhone 3G. (The part # shown on the Y-adapter is "0 440 796").
3. In early 2009, it changed to 61120440812.
4. There may be newer ones now.

I assume you got a new Y-adapter --- you may want to check the part #.

thanks brian5 ... will check out the part #, but I am assuming it's the latest since we just took delivery last month. However, you never know... maybe they just threw an old one in there...
