You're buying a $70k+ vehicle and you're worried about gas mileage? Pay the extra $5 per tank and have fun (whether you get the 48i now or wait for the TT)!

Dear Mr. Undecided,

Turbos are pretty reliable. And, in California, come with a 7/70k warranty!

(The X5 Diesel is my third turbocharged motor....)

Why is it you want the 4.8 anyway??

No worry about the turbos failing, (since you say you're looking to keep long term) and an 2010 model will be the last V8 production model without the turbos.

I prefer NA engine and if I have a choice in the future I will continue to buy a NA engine over a compressed engine. My last car, a C32 was horrible. It drove OK day to day but when going hot into a corner I would have to wait for it to catch up coming out of the corner. Not sure how much of this was related to MB, the automatic (first automatic) or the supercharger but when I drove a CLK 500 NA, the engine and gears responded as expected, e.g. just like my E36M3. My 4.8i handles as expected.

It really saddened me when I came back to BMW and saw the BMW NA site with only compressed cars for the top of each model line. They may be reliable blah, blah, blah but my first and hopefully last experience was horrible. That and my constant fear of the SC/turbo blowing one day out of warranty and costing me a fortune to replace. It may all be unwarranted but it causes me anxiety none the less.

As for mileage unless you are comparing a diesel to the 4.8i and whatever turbocharged the difference in fuel consumption is nominal. Made me laugh to read stories about people selling cars at a loss when gas prices rose to gain 4 mpg.

Now if you leasing or buying new cars every few years forget all of the above.

This is my first X5 and I don't know that I want the 4.8 (instead of a TT V8). Normally I go for the higher hp engine (the M is out of range), but I have heard alot of issues/concerns with turbos in general. Aside from this, the TT V8 engine is still just an unconfirmed rumor.

for what it's worth...i have an 08 3.0 and was about to get the 2010 4.8 until i heard about the TT8s...

even the TT6 may not be a bad option..

but i honestly don't believe they will be available in spring..most likely late in the year..

i do think it will be worth the wait though...

the front/rear ends may change and these new engines will be the new standard...

if you can wait then wait..

having an 08 X5 for me it was an easy decision to wait...I just wish i'd gotten the V8 when i had the chance....

and for those interested... my 3.0 averages 16.5mpg according to the digital dash calculator... i'm also heavy on the pedal..

13-14mpg for a 4.8 is about 50-60 miles less per full tank...

maybe 10 bucks per week more on gas...not a major difference.

should have bought the 4.8 back then...

Thanks all for the great replies. I got the dealer to hold it one more day, so I can have a little more time to stress about this decision.

Not a rumor, we have seen the xDrive50i badge on LCI X5 test mules. . The facelift car is ready to go into prod. BMW is gearing up the Spartanburg factory for new X3 production and therefore the delay.

My take is that they have pushed the release to NY auto show. Don't think they can hold off any longer than NY auto show in April. Once the car's debut happens it will be out. Production on new releases usually starts 2 to 3 months before the car is at dealer.

buy the 4.8 because it is here today. Even if they built a TT tomorrow, it would take like 6 weeks... And I dont believe there is any being built now.
Both cars will run great because its a BMW. This is a truck anyways, its like like you care about your 0-60 time difference of .2 seconds.
NA has less things to maintain and break for a Daily Driver. Turbos will need to be rebuilt at one point. It will be years but will need it.
the sudden torque could shorten the life of the tranny (doubt it but has a chance)
MOST IMPORTANT THING! WHAT IS YOUR SCREEN NAME? WHY ARE YOU WAITING???

Believe me . . . this is torture for me. I'm only hesitating because of all the talk of the TT V8, which probably is a significant power boost. When I drove the 4.8, the power felt sufficient and solid, but not impressive compared to rivals like the RR sport. However, as a few here have pointed out, I may be better off with the NA as I hope to own this ride for 8-10 years.
