No. It houses the ECU. It has a fan to moderate the temperature because it's in the engine compartment. The fan comes on whenever the HVAC fan is on and draws air from inside the cabin.

I had it in the dealer recently for some other things and I had them try to find the hum, but they couldn't of course. After I picked it up I tried to replicate it in the parking lot, but I couldn't get it to do it. It seems to happen more often after the engine is fully warmed up.

Just an update for this thread,
As stated in earlier posts, the faint hum comming from the climate control that drove me nuts for a while was the secondary pump. Dealer replaced it at no cost, even though my car was out of warranty.

Ditto here. MY '10 35d. Faint hum - constant pitch and loudness when you turn on the fan. dealer replaced aux water pump. Problem fixed. Work order states:
1 64-11-9-197-085 ADDITIONAL WATER PUMP: 641030 |
