For all of you who think the 20" wheels are useless in the snow

This was from last December 25th. Dumped about 24" in 3 hours, then another 12-18" through the day. The X5 had no trouble plowing through the snow, I didn't get stuck once. I had Toyo Proxes M&S, they had about a year of wear on them.

I still want to get some 19" wheels with Bridgestone Blizzak's for my new X5 for the Winter time. I saw a 4.8 with 21" wheels around town, it looked even beefier than mine with 20"s. So, I turn in my 4.8 at the end of lease next month :-(.

But, off to Europe for April, to pick up a 335 M Sport Package (which will eventually replace my M5 - the gas is just too expensive - $400-500/month), and then hopefully when we return, I'll be trading the M5 in on a new Xdrive5.0i, if they are out in May. I'll probably wait till the lease rates melow out.

To sum it all up, out of my 330i, M3, 1st 335i, M5, the X5 has been my favorite. Most versatille, plenty of go power (another 50 will be awesome), incredible handling. I will miss my X5 over the next few months!!!

Really? No offense intended, but are you accustomed to driving in the snow? The old "an object in motion tends to stay in motion" is way more true in the snow. So many people think that just because they have an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive vehicle that they can stop and turn better in the snow than 2 wheel drive vehicles. While one can turn slightly better with an all wheel drive vehicle (only if the gas is slightly applied, so as to get pull from the front wheels), the ability to turn and stop is pretty much just as bad as a 2 wheel drive vehicle.

I drove up the first year on the stock tires, and while they didn't provide as much forward traction as the Proxes, they were adequate.

At any rate, for all I know you are well accustomed to driving in the snow, and if so, please forgive me explaining what you probably already know.

Cheers!

yes i am accustomed to driving the snow when it happens..it snowed about 23" a few weeks ago and when the snowplows ran through my street i decided to head out for a coffee up the street. there was snow on the ground but when i made that turn and not even going fast the truck just headed for the curb..i keep thinking as it was happening "please dont hit that curb x5"..i dont need another headache...anyway im sure the snow you put on work alot better than the stock tires...next year ill keep the proxes in mind...thanks !!!

Proxes are pretty sufficient in snow, even the 315 11" width ones.

BTW, that's a lot of gas money... and so shall the 50i be.

Are you picking up a facelifted coupe 335i or the 335is or a 335i sedan?

335i sedan, but very good question. I didn't see the 335is in your bulletin? I did see the new coupe and vert. Is there a 335is that will have the same engine as the Z4 3.5is?

I don't know how all of your tyres turn on ice but my Summer 20 " Bridgestone dueler are like ice skating..... unless you are cirque de soleil then forget it.... OK during the day with snow conditions its not such a big problem... but during the night with ice conditions its like a roller coaster...

Yeah I had no problems with 20s in the snow! Obviously ice is a different story, no matter what tyre you got your gonna be sliding ! Don't worry bout how much fuel will cost, when your spending that sort of money on a car getting money for the fuel shouldn be an issue!

Check this. But its coupe or cabrio. Wasn't sure what you are getting.
