Diesel Engine Clutter

I took delivery of my 35d on Saturday. Enjoying the ride so far. Only thing that bothered today morning was diesel engine clatter. Is it going to be more in the mornings? I hope it smoothes out as engine wears. Am I wrong ?

If 30i is 100 decibels, how do you compare 35d engine noise level, those of you who owned both or driven both for quite some time?

Thanks

YouTube - 2009 BMW 335d Engine Sound

Haven't heard it in person, but I can say that it sounds a lot like my Isuzu truck. It sounds weird coming from a sedan but an SUV I wouldn't think twice.

Mine now has 2500 miles and I haven't noticed a change. Never bothers me. I rarely hear it. You'd have to have the windows rolled down while stationary with engine running to hear anything significant.

Clatter.

IDK, my Kubota and Powerstroke Diesel both sound great. And louder.

It's interesting in that a lot of how you react to sounds has to do with what your are use to hearing. I've had my diesel a couple of months now and the other day when I heard someone start their vehicle in a parking lot I caught myself thinking, "gee, what a wimpy sounding engine."

Of course it wasn't really "a wimpy sounding engine," I apparently have just gotten use to the sound of a diesel idling.

I notice it a little bit when it's cold, but after that it really sounds like my old 2008 X5 3.0. I was initially troubled by the sound, but go used to it very fast.

Once you take it out and accelerate a few times, you'll appreciate what is under the hood. Smooth and very torquey!

It is noisy only after overnight. But this is my first SUV, so I feel powerful too. Sound should complement that as I get used to it. Thanks

Yes I do agree with you, but again I am not sure as I am coming from 2007 MDX ( which had a very quiet interior - but again GAS engine)

I took it once to the dealer, he said its twin turbo noise/spooling and all that.
I have 2500 miles as of now, Even the wind noise is too much in my X5d, After I play the cd/radio...@ 65/70 mph..I hear the wind noise/road noise...its so annoying, I am going to the dealer again next week. Not sure some of this is related to RFT

I agree, engine clatter is more in the cold mornings, I am totally disappointed in this regard.

The Cummins team that put the first diesel in a Dodge pickup coined the phrase "Wendy's test". It passed the test when you could leave the engine running when ordering from the drive thru.

I don't think the older Cummins ISBs ever passed that test, yet I believe the new 2010 Cummins engine comes pretty close. I've never had to shut off the engine at the drive thru on the X5, and like Penguin........I like the sound at idle.......

When the engine is cold, you will hear more clatter. It's totally normal and it's much more quiet when it warms up. I have no wind noise in mine. I didn't have tire noise until my dealer switched my Michelin's for these crappy Bridgestone's. 3 out of 4 of my wheels were damaged at delivery. BMW didn't want to give me new wheels, they wanted to repair the scratched wheels. I raised hell with the dealership and the GM agreed to swap my wheels. That's how I got stuck with the Bridgestone's. I should have never taken delivery. I took the salesman's word BMW would take care of the problem and I sold my other SUV. I should have rented a car and left the X5 at the dealership. I was 120 miles from home and took an airport shuttle to pick up my car.
