Rear View Camera Upgrade?

I was in a friend's 4Runner the other day, and she has an aftermarket Kenwood NAV system with backup camera. I was totally blown away by the resolution on her back-up cam compared with the BMW, particularly at night.

Has anyone ever replaced the OEM camera with a better one? Is it possible?

Thanks for any insight...

It should be possible, I don't see why not. There's probably nothing outwardly unique about the actual camera used, save for the fact that it's low resolution, due primarily to cost concerns, I'm sure.

Though, I'm going to gather that there is some type of autofocusing mechanism or contrast detection system within the stock camera that detects objects and displays them in the yellow, green, and black boxes that appear on the screen when the rear camera is activated.

Maybe the camera interfaces with the radar, system in the bumper, I'm not sure, but others probably will be.

But, while a high resolution camera is nice I'm curious to learn why? I can't see it assisting you in parking, and at night higher resolution would be great, but everything is easily seen, even if it is grainy.

It seems like a waste of money, hassle, and time and I don't think it would truly add to the functionality of the vehicle.

But, if you like to tinker, and it's just a project for fun, have at it. I'm all for that! Though, as a way to improve your reverse driving skills? Nah, I wouldn't even bother with it.
