Exhaust Fluid notice - when does the notice appear?
We took possession of our 35d in May and now have 9500 miles. However, I have yet to receive a notice that the Exhuast Fluid needs to be added. I thought it would have happened by now. When did everyone receive their notification? BTW - SUV runs great. Only two isues and one was fixed. DVD navi system had to be replaced (fixed) and the brakes squeal (not fixed - common problem apparently). Love driving this thing on the Autobahn! |

I suppose by now you know that a properly filled and functioning 35d DEF system should last between normal Condition Based Oil Services. So in many (probably most) cases a 35d owner should not see a notice that the DEF needs filling. But of course, we are seeing several reports of DEF system warnings even after a low number of miles. The majority of these appear to be due to the DEF system not being properly filled or refilled. But some are due to the passive tank freezing long enough to draw the active tank down to the warning level. And a handful appear to be due to DEF system malfunctions (leaky tanks or busted sensors). So no news is good news ![]() Funf Dreisig |

Manual clearly states that driving conditions determine how long the DEF fluid will last. For some that means 10k miles. For others that means 5k miles.
You will eventually get a 1,000 mile warning/message, in which the vehicle informs you that you have 1,000 miles to fill the DEF fluid, at which point you should take the vehicle to your dealer for service. You can fill the DEF on your own, in a pinch, but it appears that many dealers are flushing the DEF reservoirs (there are 2), before refilling an X5 35d with clean DEF fluid. |
