No factoy tint on the top of front windshield

We just picked up a 2010 x35d a few days ago. I just noiced that the top of the front windshield is not tinted. Is this a factory option I missed or is BMW trying to save $$ on this car.

My 07 E70 came with the sunglare tint, then, when it was replaced at the dealership a few months, the new windshield (with HUD) did not have the tint... who knows why...

Glass company had it replaced with non OEM most likely.

My 09 e70 came with a grey shadeband on top of the windscreen - I did not order it. The option is 3AP Windscreen with Grey Shade Band.

In perusing realoem, it appears the windshield part numbers changed in 10/2008, with a different set before and after this production date. I'm guessing that BMW removed the tint band in 10/2008 and that when replacing the windshields, the newer pert number might be used by some glass people.

But that's just a guess.

Have people lived without or have they tinted the top section?

I actually was pleased when I saw my 2010 X5 didn't have the tinted top section. For me it gives a more "open" feel. If the time if day is such that sun-in-the-eyes is a problem, I use the visor. Being somewhat tall, the tinit bands often would irritate me, as they would impinge on my vision.

If I had a choice, I would choose "no top tint band."

They probably used clear tint, more on UV protection purposes. Learn more about window tints at TintBuyer, they provide helpful information on window tints such as it types, quotations and will help you find professional window tint installer near your area.

The windshield without tine is standard equipment on BMWs with the HUD. My e60 with HUD had no tint band from the factory and when I had BMW replace the windshield a year later they informed that the non banded windshield was the specified part for HUD equipped cars. My current e70 X5 also has HUD and came with no tint band.
