Difference in feel (grunt/torque) between 4.8 and 5.0?

Any of you who can compare the low-end and mid-range grunt of the 4.8 to the new 5.0? I have preferred diesels because of towing capacity, but could be tempted by the new petrol turbo due to the increase in torque. I am mainly interested in difference in how strong they feel, not 0-60 numbers. Example, 4.8 kills the diesel 35 (3.0sd) in a 0-60 sprint, but in real life, on the highway, the diesel feels like it is pulling stronger when you overtake. It also feels stronger when you tow something. Last edited by uhs; 04-28-2010 at 07:56 AM. |

That is a lot of torque and hp with the 5.0.

What are the specs on torque- diesel vs 5.0? The majority here are US based and the 30d is the only choice- in the EU perhaps you can get the new 40d? You just cannot beat torque for that feeling of power. Towing, maintaining speed... |

PasPar2, thanks for the link tip. Mainly comments regarding looks and spec of the new model, but on page 42 "rans09vert" says: "I drove an X6 50i. I first drove a 2010 X5 4.8i, and then the X6 50i, back to back to compare. X6 is basically the same from the front seat forward. Same motor and hp, and about the same weight. Loved the power of the 4.8. But the 4.4 twin turbo is tremendously stronger. It is a true low 5 second 0-60, maybe faster! It is pretty darm close to an X5M. Night and day over the 2010 4.8i, of which I had an order, cancelled, and ordered the 2011." Exactly the type of info I was looking for! |

The US has the 35d, not the 30d. The 30d is sold outside of North America, as is the 35d with the 40d to come very soon. Regardless of the name all are 3.0-litre engines, the difference is with the turbo systems.

The turbo's feel stronger because of the torque "under the curve" and that they make torque at a lower rpm than a naturally aspirated motor (unless it's a biig stroker type motor, which can make some Great torque down low). I'd really like to drive a new 2011 TT 4.4 and compare it to our 4.8i. It might be a Huge mistake though because it would probably end up costing us more money (want to buy it )! Those V10 Diesel Touareg's are Monsters! I just googled them and they are impressive! I didn't know about them when we bought our X5 and if I did, I might be on the Vee Dub forum now! In reality, I'm glad that we bought our X5 and have no regrets, other than the fact that there aren't many mods for them and the ones that are out there aren't cheap!
