Hard drive upgrade?

I have a 2010 X5 35D for 4 months now, and I have managed to fill up the hard disk with MP3's. Has anyone upgraded the drive in the vehicle with a larger size?

Ditch your hard drive storage, which has the MAJOR drawback of being impossible to edit without creating multiple "folders" or having to re-load. Better to play your media directly from a [editable] USB stick.

Or . . .

I use a Western Digital Passport 120GB drive plugged into the center console USB port ( I have the iPod adapter 6FL I think)

You must use the short cable but that USB port powers the drive just fine.

I formatted it as FAT32 and I loaded it with both mp3 and WMA Lossless files. I think the WMA Lossless sound noticeably better.

I use a file folders, but as long as the files are properly tagged the iDrive allows you browse by Artist, Genre, Album, etc . . .

Of course you lose the ability to rip CD in the car, but you can load up a ton of high quality music from your computer, iTunes, etc.

For instance Staples carries the WD My Passport 320GB drive for $79.

stimulate - cheap & practical solution and the way I'll go. Now I just need to re-encode a bunch of my favorite CDs on WMA lossless...

Thank you!

ok, so if I just plug in an external hard disk into the USB (in my case it is in the glove box) the vehicle will self power the HDD via the USB interface and I can browse the songs, play them, etc without copying them?

What I just discovered about an hour ago, is that the USB in the glove box doesn't power a hard drive.

But the 6FL USB does. YMMV, but shouldn't...

Sorry, I'm new here, what is the 6FL USB? Is that another interface on the vehicle?

It's the USB port that is in the center console and is part if the iPod/iPhone integration kit that doesn't work to charge the iPhone very often and is therefore all but useless to me. ( sorry had to throw that in to vent ).

But it works with a USB drive and now I know it works with a USB hard drive too. So now I can stop carting aroub the 400.00 wire and start using a 60.00 USB HD.

Picked up the 320GB that "stimulate" recommended from Newegg tonight for $87 including shipping. Available in various colors to suit your taste (match your paint!).

Newegg.com - WD My Passport 320GB, Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB

p.s. newegg reviews indicate problem with VCD software but latest software from WD seems to have fixed the issues.
