The safest way is to ensure your buyer has an account at a local (or nationwide) branch that has a B&M location near to your house.

For example lets say I want to buy your X and I have an account at Wells Fargo. You go with me to the Wells Fargo Branch and we both sit down with a worker and you have the bank check made out to me right there on the spot and you confirm there are enough funds in the account to cover it (actually the bank shouldn't issue the check if there are not).

If your buyer is legitimate they will probably have an account at Wells Fargo, Chase, B of A, First Bank, etc... If they don't have any accounts and any B&M locations and want to give you a bank check for $35,000 from "Regional Bank of Montana" and drive off with your car the next day, tell them no thanks.

hell, if they are serious they will wire the money to your account before the transaction is finalized.

money orders can be faked so don't go that route.

I don't take any chances, I want cash or a wire directly into my account. If the buyer is legit he/she should be willing to pay for the car in that way that you want. There is too much fraud with negotiable instruments.

Last car I sold was our 325xi, on Craigslist. I would recommend it. It took one day, and the first person that showed up bought it. We left the car at my place. We drove to a local branch of his bank, and I got a bank draft, guaranteed funds. We drove to the registration office, and transferred title. We drove back to my place, and I put his new plates on for him. No trouble at all.

Sold my 4.8is. Guy came from GA with a cashier's check. My bank called his to verify (they got the number, not one given by buyer). You will get a lot of calls from people offering to buy it unseen ("I will fly in", "I am buying it for a friend") which is complete BS.

Craigslist, sell local to someone with a local driver's license. Usual recommendations on cash or guaranteed funds.

Be reasonable about the list price so it's a good deal for you and the buyer. Don't ask for too much. That way you won't need to talk with many people before selling it. Use kbb.com for private sale value.

If you try to get "what you think it's worth" instead of "what the market will pay for it", you will have to talk with a lot of idiots along the way. Put a price on your time.
