Can't get my iPhone 4 to play through my X5 stereo

I purchased a new iPhone 4 last week and have had it hooked-up to my 2007 335i's stereo through the iPod connector and everything works normally.

Today I tried the same thing with my 2009 X5, but I'm having problems. The iPhone 4 is displaying my playlists correctly, but I can't get the X5 to play the songs. After I scroll through my playlists and find the song I want to play, I press down on the iDrive controller to select the song. Nothing happens. No sound, and the song length display stays at 00:00.

I first thought the new phone isn't compatible with the X5 software, but the older 335i plays everything just fine. The X5 also worked correctly with my older iPhone 3GS.

Anyone else having the same problem? Any ideas how to fix it?

Try a soft reset on the iPhone whilst it's plugged in to the BMW. To do this press and hold the on/off button until the slide to power offscreen is displayed. Then press and hold the home button until the home screen is shown. Try again selecting a song from the BMW radio. You may need to select the iPhone again from the entertainment menu on the BMW.

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

Also, if you're using the y-cable, make sure the 3.5mm jack is all the way in. Sometimes it comes out a bit.

You're holding it wrong.

My 2010 x5 was doing the same thing. I updated my Iphone 3gs to the 4.0 software and my music wouldnt play through the y cable. All o my playlists and songs would load but nothing would play. I reset the iphone by holding the home button and the top button until the apple logo appeared. This solved the trick and my music now plays. Hope this helps.

I am using my new iPhone 4 and my old 3G (with iOS4) without any issues with my '08 X5.
Try restarting your phone...if the issue persists, test your phone with an iPhone docking station. You could also try disabling your phone's bluetooth. Sometimes in my car, the iPhone automatically switches the music playback to bluetooth (A2DP) instead of dock connector (iPOD kit) and then the playback stops. I then open the iPhone music player and change the playback device to Dock connecter and it resolves the issue.

I have had no issues with my iPhone 4 and my 2008 X5. Music plays back just fine.

I assume the OP is using 6FL as I am.

Just a thought. Some people have had to restore their
3G/3GS iPhones after the 4.0 update. Apparently there
are some issues that effect use.

I did this after upgrading and issues went away.
Be warned a restore will take a while.
