I can understand a car getting bigger but an SUV that gets bigger (and of course it might only be an inch longer when it comes out--who knows) at some point you lose handling characteristics when it becomes too big. Most people I think would agree that the e53 handles better and drives better than the bigger e70. I'm sure it will be ok when it comes out but to think that BMW will add much more weight and size to it will create a challenge to keep it driving like a BMW.

Yeah I understand your point very well and wasn't questioning its validity. Cars and trucks always seem to grow incrementally. BMW is the master of chassis dynamics so lets hope the 3rd gen x5 defies the conventions of modern science as most x's seem to do!

Any word on the LED halos? Are they the same as the ones in new 7's and 5s?

Picture is from the new 2011 X5 brochure that has a bit more info on the updated tech features.

Brochure makes no mention of LED Coronas, so I assume it's a safe bet they're not coming in Sept.

Wonder how much of this will make it to US cars?

Also, wonder if I can get my 2010 X5's reflashed to enable any of this that does make it to US cars.

All of it, since it is being announced by BMWNA, which is the US sales arm of BMW.

None of it is available for retrofit to vehicles produced prior, since it is enabled by hardware advances, according to the announcement posted above.

On page 9 of the 2011 X5 brochure (available for download on bmwusa.com), it shows a closeup picture of the new headlight assembly with the following caption, "...while centrally positioned foglights and Xenon Adaptive Headlights with new LED Daytime Running Lights further distinguish the vehicle's distinctive front section..." I did not see any disclaimers.

Do you suppose they are referring to the new corona rings? The brochure also mentions the updated software changes, Mobile Office, bluetooth, etc. There may still be hope for the new lights on Sept builds...

I have to be honest, I am pretty mad that I have not even taken delivery of my X6 yet and there are already updates. I completely understand that automotive technology is always changing, but the 2011's just came out! And not even some of the new features are available via a software update?!?

Yeah, I hadn't seen that on first round. So page 9 talks about LED Daytime Running lights... but page 44 refers to simply "Corona headlight-rings", whereas the 5-series brochure specifically says, "LED Corona headlight-rings".

Anybody have a contact at BMW that can find out for sure?
