But after the re-set, I can feel more vibration coming from the steering wheel, and when I turn on the air conditioner, the rpm goes up to 900 rpm but the vibration lessens. Can they just play with the default rpm value like that? I thought there was a factory spec rpm that's recommended for the 3.0 gasoline engine. I'm afriad when I ask to tune down to the default rpm again, they won't know what value it's supposed to be. That's too bad 'cause higher rpm while stationary must translate to more fuel consumption. And this vibrating steering wheel causes fatigue much sooner. |

They all come set to a default level across the board, but yes the techs can easily through a service function of the diagnostic session adjust many aspects of the idle. We can adjust the base idle, with gear selected, with ac selected, with gear and ac selected, at low voltage (to run alternator faster) etc.
We sometimes have customers come in with the complaint that it shakes at idle, and I play with the idle setting it higher/lower to smooth it out. Usually just 50 - 60 rpm makes all the difference in the world.

Wow, didn't know that! Thanks a lot Weasel.
Do you know what the default or most desired rpm on 3.0 gasoline engine may be? I'd like to change it back. The steering wheel vibration came after replacing the engine mount, so I complained about it and they changed the rpm saying it's a standard procedure to adjust it after the job's done. But now the vibration is worse than before... |

Also, can the value of rpm be too low? I wouldn't like to risk it.

The computer only lets you adjust it within a specified range. They do give you a couple hundred rpm to play with, but can't go too high or too low. Maybe just have them readjust it till they get it smoothed out properly. It usually takes a couple tries to find the smoothest rpm range... sucks that the tech didn't double check his work and confirm it was smoothed out before giving back the vehicle.

Thanks! I will do that with the tech so I can tune to the right rpm. Such knowledge is so valuable when dealing with the tech. I was so in the dark and I thought I have to live with the steering wheel vibration. Thanks again!
