Voice Control

Hi

Looking at changing my X5 for new LCI X5. Have an Exec at the moment which came standard with voice control, new models (in Aus) it is an extra and dealer can't find a car with voice in colour I want. Don't want factory build.

How many people have got new X5's and not got voice control but had it previously, how have you got on without it, did you miss it?

Regards

David

I definitely use voice control. I mostly use it to dial phone numbers and enter addresses in the nav, both of which would be extremely dangerous to do without vc while driving.

However, would it control my decision on whether to buy a car or not? If two are sitting side by side, one with vc and one without, I'd choose the one with vc. If there were only one and it didn't have vc, it wouldn't control the decision.

What "nicities" WOULD control it? Dual power seats, memory seat on at least the driver's side, miles->0 calculation, good cupholders (Texas and all), and a decent sound system; doesn't have to be b*tching, just good. Those have been my "must have's" since 1995 (before 1995, none of those were a requirement but the sound, but I was willing to retro that myself before then and always did). [Wouldn't have had to get the premium sound package in the 35d if they hadn't put the "stupid sound" anti-package in it in the first place...b*stards].

Everything else is a given in this category: a/c, power steering, antilock brakes, etc.

What do I have now that I could do without if were presented with a car without them on the lot, but I think are really cool and use every day? Nav, Ipod control, HUD, Rear A/C (my son would probably balk at that, but *I* could do without it), Bluetooth, Adaptive Drive, comfort access, power liftgate, PDC, backup camera, and 3rd row seat (we don't use that one every day). Which of those would I really miss? Ipod, bluetooth, and comfort access.

I just thought of something else, that may not be a must for every car, but is for this car: side mirrors that fold in. I don't think I could get my car in the garage if they didn't fold in. Also, the steering wheel that goes up when you turn off the car. I've gotten so used to it that I find it REALLY annoying when it doesn't when I get a 3-series loaner. [What's up with these manual seats? What's up with this steering wheel not moving for me to get out? I have to adjust this wheel with a lever? My flimsy cupholder is where?? Who would buy this car? What a baby...]

I got an Aussie X5 LCI 30d last month, my first BMW. At first I was worried I did not order the voice control. When I got the car, I realised it has "partial" voice control for phone use. These include dialing number, redial, creating and dialing names in phonebook.

You need to order voice control for other uses such as navigation input, change settings etc. Not having any experience with it, I cannot comment. However, I use the shortcuts for navigation address book, start/stop voice guidance, music collection, USB music, night mode navigation map, journey computer, and split screen.
