all the firmware updates are all-inclusive of the previous ones aren't they? If so shouldn't a recent update already include that one from a while back?

I know this is an old thread but I just saw it.

My 05 4.4 had been doing this since I bought it as a cert pre owned in 07. As I described it to BMW it felt like it was skipping 1st gear (auto trans) and going straight to 2nd with a clunk. I too got the stares from pedestrians and the "what the hells" from passengers.

After complaining several times to BMW (like 10) they "reset the computer" "rebooted the computer" "upgraded software" (these are all things I was told). I was also told that "this is just something all X5's do, it's a glitch. Ya like I was going to swallow that. I may be a woman but I'm not stupid.

I finally threatened to take the problem to BMW corporate. Not until then was I offered to have a new transmission put in. Problem solved!

Oh, wow! Thanks amderrick, that's what I should have done. I don't think that I have a lot of leverage since I'm out of warranty, however.

My car had the same issue except mine involved the parking brake. I would notice a pronounced "lurch" when I parked the car on a flat surface. 3 trips to the dealer and 1 service update and it was finally resolved. My new issue that I've noticed this week is a RPM surge when I first turn on the car. It generally happens 4 or 5 times and then goes away. Has anyone experienced that?

"jerks"?

One classic symptom is when coming to a stop the engine/transmission is still engaged and is still driving the car forward as you brake- then the transmission disengages abruptly causing a pronounced 'stop' since you've been braking hard to counter the forward drive. This kind of jerk is a symptom of the trans not releasing- an issue with the lock up torque converter, or associated sensors actuators.

Being able to PRECISELY describe the 'jerk' would be of benefit when asking here or taking it to a mechanic....

Will the software update will solve the problem? Talked the dealer yesterday, needs to bring it in for diagnostic and update if there is an update for my transmission for $219.....they need the X for the whole day.

"trans not releasing- an issue with the lock up torque converter, or associated sensors actuators." is it an expensive fix??

These things are crap! In addition to the jerkiness from start, the dealer quoted $7000 to fix all of the oil leaks. That's after throwing $2000 away to pay to get oil leaks fixed, only to still have oil spots on the garage floor.

Power seats broke under warranty too, but the dealer wouldn't fix. The X5 is just garbage!
