After considering various options, I decided to go with a standard BMW recommended Style 209 and Dunlop Grandtrek WT M3 ROF RFT. I know, I know this setup looks really boring. I'm not sure, if "BMW recommended" means something. I found the following link while I was looking for the winter setup, apparently BMW recommended set of 298M did't work out for this poor guy

Ooops!! BMW X5 M Flips Upside Down

BTW, is there anything special I should with the summer setup - 214's and Dunlop SP Sport Maxx DSST RFT before storing them?

The guy was trying to avoid the idiot parked on the blind curve of highway, nothing to do with xDrive or wheel/tires.

I'm thinking of replacing my 2008 X5 4.8i Sports Package (E70) with 2012 X5 xDrive 50i with M package (not X5 M). Anybody knows, if 18" wheels Style 209 (winter set) will work with the new 2012 vehicle. According to BMW, Style 209 is a recommended set of winter wheels for X5 until 10/2010.

They should fit, but I'm not certain. I don't think the wheel or bore sizes changed from pre-LCI to LCI models.

You might want to consider Style 223M staggered wheels, which are specifically designed for the M Sport package. I just bought a set with Pirelli Scorpion Snow & Ice as my Winter set:

When you say they are "Specifically Designed" what does that mean? I know they are part of the M-sport package and they say they are lighter but other than that, I don't know what is different about them or make it specific for the M Sport. The M sport package is just ground effects.

It appears that BMW USA Web site still recommends Style 209 for 2012 X5 as a "Winter Set" regardless of the model (35d, 35i, 50i).

ShopBMWUSA.com: Wheels and Wheel Accessories: Cold Weather Wheel and Tire Assemblies

However, PN changed sometime in 2010 to 36 11 2 211 335.

Any 18" or 19" E70 X5 rim will work for a winter wheel. There is nothing special about the winter setup BMW suggests. Just what they have available to sell.

When I said "specifically designed" for the M Sport package, I meant that this is the standard 19" inch wheel option for the M Sport. BMW Canada recommends the Style 223M wheels with Scorpion Snow & Ice tire package for the M Sport. The wheels are staggered, which fills the M Sport wheel arches better than a non-staggered set up, like Style 209 or 210 wheels.
