Price already commented on this, but to add some background.
A recent discussion with BMW Canada about a service issue with a new X1 included the disclosure that BMW Canada doesn't employ any engineering staff, just marketing and customer contact personnel. That may or may not be accurate, but it was BMW Canada that said it in this case.
That supports the hypothesis that the BMW Canada 'recommendations' may be based more on what they have lot of in the warehouse than on what specific tire/wheel combination works best in winter conditions. There is nothing wrong with their recomendations in this case, but there is no magic to them. It is more important to use a good winter tire instead of an all season, than which specific winter tire it is, IMO.
