When to service?

I bought my X used from a non-BMW dealer, so I didn't get as through of a training on the car as I would like.
I was told that the number that shows up when you first turn on the car, as well as in iDrive under the service is the mileage until service will be needed. However, that number (7000 mls) is not declining for me like I expected.
Is something wrong or am I not reading something correctly?

How do I know when upcoming scheduled service is needed?

That number will decrease based on your driving habits, miles, oil consumption, etc--it's not always going to change every time you get in the car.

Since the service indicator is a "gauge" of ~ 15,000 miles, one wouldn't
expect it to change that quickly.

Here's a link for the pdf of the Manual...I'm guessing yours is an '07, but other years are archived on this site, too.
