Home made rear entertainment unit

I would like to present my weekend project - home made X5 rear entertainment unit for my 2 little bosses, total cost AUD290 !

Monitor : 2 nos 9.2" LCD from ebay AUD180. modified a string to hook the monitor & tie it to the headrest.

Player : DVD, VCD, avi, mpeg ...... with front USB & SD card reader from ebay AUD110. try to install to the back of armrest where the 12V socket is, but found out the space is too narrow. modified a leg to the unit & place under the seat. connect A/C power from the 12V socket & a permenant +ve 12V from rear fuse box. connect the line out to "AUX in" in the centre console.

cheers !

Nice install! The only modification that I choose to do is ditch the DVD Player and run my monitors with a Ipod. DVD's are a pain in the ARS when you are traveling. Kids wanting a different movie 30 min on a 3hour trip, having to carry all the DVD's, contort your body to change the disk, ect... I purchased a Video Ipod (classic, touch, iphone) and purchased the ipod TV adapter and Viola Movies on both TV's, More DVD's and ton's of movies in the palm of your hand.

The only caveat is that you have to rip/convert your movies to MPEG 4 format. It takes two simple programs(free)(DVD Decryptor and Videodora) and 20 min depending on the speed of your machine.

Nice! One serious concern - you need to have a cover for the control unit - kids will kick and break it with their feet if left uncovered.

Looks great. Well done.

I agree that it might need some kind of cover to protect from little feet
