Besides that dlrs "can", (though I would like to hear from Weasel/killcrap on that issue), why would the selling dlr in CA reset it to 1? Did it have a few hundred on the odo?
Strange...
But, congrats to the OP on that fine white diesel!

Who put all those miles on your car - mine said zero on the odometer and 0.1 on the trip when I picked it up!

I had a quick test drive when it first arrived at the dealer and there was around 20km on the clock (can't remember exactly). They then had the car for another couple of days to do the final preps and when I picked it up the odometer was back down to 2 or 3. I recall asking the SA and he said its simply because customers prefer to have a low number there on delivery. I wasn't surprised frankly.

I'm surprised that is legal.

What I have been told by a VW dealer is that they are able/allowed to reset the odometer up to 3 times when the odometer does not read more than a specific millage (somewhere in the 20-30 km range can't remember exactly.) However, these modifications are registered in the car.

hi - can you elaborate on the "replacement moonroof" and leaking? I have a moonroof close issue where the wind-deflector snaps shut pretty hard... about to have them do a full cassette replacement because it's the 3rd time the same thing is failing. Maybe having the techs take the whole thing apart may be a bad idea here...

I guess if they really wanted to hide something without leaving a trace, they could just replace the odometer unit with a new one.

I believe it is coded to the vehicle, and only BMW NA can code it, not the dealer, and such a replacement would be in the service records of the vehicle. (But I'm not 100% sure of this).

Moonroof

Upon delivery day, the CA opened the moonroof and only one side of the wind deflector went up. He broke it trying to get the other side up. Made arrangements to bring back X5 the next weekend for repair.

After a full day in shop, SA said BMWNA authorized the dealer to replace the cassette. They could not get the unit to work right. Do not open moonroof.

Two weeks later and two days in shop, cassette replaced.

4 weeks later, moonroof would not close. It would move to close but hit a point where it would cycle back open. I was able to get it close after I pushed lightly on glass from above while my wife pushed the switch. However, something popped inside very loudly and a piece of the cassette was hanging down from the headliner.

Took X5 to different dealer, again BMW authorized cassette replacement. Two weeks later and two days later, moonroof cassette replaced. 5 weeks later, power liftgate would not open. Original dealer found that the dealer that replaced the cassette the second time did not connect drain lines and the water would leak through, down headliner, and collect on contacts for power liftgate.

Anyway, these problems, along with others, contributed to BMW buying back our '09X5 35d.
