2011 X5 5.0i TPM sensors not compatible with 2007 X5 rims
So heads up everyone who has a 2007 model and you are exchanging for a new X5 and want to use that second winter set of wheels you have in your garage!

Yep, they changed them for 2011 and it was before October 10th - mine was built mid September, around the 12th and it has the new TPM's - I just had to buy a set and instead of $200 for the older ones, they are $320 for a set. I believe it actually change with the 2011 model back in April as others have already have mentioned this issue as far back as July of this year.

TR still has the sensors for $200 for a 2011 X5? Are you guys suggesting these sensors might not work?

They likely won't work, I called a couple places and both looked up the 2011 by VIN and the $200 units won't work, the one's that work for the 2011 are $300 aftermarket (still made by the same company that makes them for BMW, but no one had them in stock) or $320 from tischer, so I picked them up there, local dealer prices them at $400. The TR ones look like the same ones you can get anywhere, the 433 mhz units for 200 bucks.
Apparently there is a cutoff date in 2010 when they switched, guessing it corresponds to the 2011 beginning of production date back in April. Call a dealer to make sure, they will look up your VIN and tell you if the older ones will work with your particular vehicle or not. |

Makes me hope I win my bid over on ebay to get a cheap setup for the winter since it looks like neither TR or this listing will have sensors that work. IMO, $300 is a joke. We managed to survive before these sensors. Looks like both my Z and X will have the constant dash light on throughout the winter--sort of festive looking for the holidays...

All in all Ford had a bad design prone to rolling over, maybe more prone with low tire inflation, but still - basically no other vehicle with the same tire on it had an issue, but we all get to pay now! |

That's strange, I just talked to gary at tirerack and mine uses the old one. My build date is "09/10" He mentioned about the cutoff date and said mine doesn't qualify for it.
Did he miss something here? This would be a big pain if I find out after I get wheels and tires mounted.. |

Yea their website has no way but that's why I had to contact them directly. He asked specifically for my build date because he's well aware of this change.
What confuses me is what roadkillrob is saying?? does that new sensor work for both years? |

There is a lot of conflicting info out there, people started talking about it early this year - the TPMS changed with the 2010 model year, but apparently not on all models, on the X5 it seems to have changed with the 2011 model year, but unsure if it was in April at the beginning of production or recently - mine is a september build and looking it up by VIN I was told I had the new one's - maybe it changed in September at some point, haven't been able to get a good explanation on the timing anywhere, so have it looked up by your VIN to be safe. Tire Rack usually knows there stuff and certainly will make it right if they don't work, but if they don't work all the shipping and mounting to figure it out is a bummer.
The old part number was 36236781847 and the new one is 36106790054 - this is the one that went in the 3 series as of 10/09 but I can't find anything online that will give the part number for the 2011 X5 models, only the 2010 models that show the older part number. |
