Oil Low at 4600 miles in a 2011 50i?
I was on a three hour drive today and about 2 hours and 30 minutes in my X's indicator tells me that I am low on oil and need to put in a quart. I'm sitting there thinking that I might have a leak because having to put oil in at only 4600 miles doesn't seem right to me. Can anybody provide me insight into this issue?
I have a 2011 X5 5.0i Thanks, X5 Power

While I don't have experience with a 50i, that type of oil consumption is not at all surprising on any recent BMW I have owned. It doesn't hurt to look for oil spots on the ground where you usually park it, but if there aren't any, then assume that the engine used a quart.

I've had 3 X5s - 2 were 4.4i, a 4.8i and now the X6 50i. All have burned a quart every 5,000 miles or so. I wouldn't be concerned.
I would check for oil spots as JCL recommended just to be sure.

Try driving an early model E46 330...it didn't consume oil, it ate it...unless you are leaking it, I wouldn't worry, BMW will tell you that it is within specification...

same here - I had to add oil midyear to each of my BMWs (approx every 6K miles on X5, 8K miles on 335). No leaks, "normal for BMW" oil burn.

All depends on how much you're really loving that 5.0 motor. Revving it up towards redline weekly will increase the oil consumption.

Same here. My 50i eats more than my 4.8 did....I have added two quarts in 5500 miles. I do flex the engine often though

What a coincidence. I was just getting a quart this morning. Second time and I have around 6500miles.
