For night driving I want a black cabin. This is recommended to maintain visual acuity to the exterior of the car.

When it is dark out & headlights are on, so yes...all the time! But it can be adjusted how much to 'glow". But even on Max glow, it does not in the slightest bit affect visual acuity! It is actually very comforting and seems to aid night driving!

Yeah, I have the same question. Are the interior door handles illuminated? Mine are not. My 05 4.8is had this. (09 4.8 now).

You need to check out the ambient lighting on the 2011 Mini! I just got a base model to drive until my Cooper S conv. arrives in March. The lights can be adjusted for brightness and about 6 colors (actually more because you can fade between, giving purple, violet, yellow, orange, teal blue, etc) The door handles, the rear 1/4 panels, the overhead, the door pockets and even above the seat belt anchors (lights the headliner really good) have LEDs.

Just checked again this morning, in the garage. My interior door handles are NOT illuminated. The door storage compartments are and the 2 somewhat bright orange, lights by the Moonroof/light control buttons.

Our 2004 4.4i and 4.8is X5 had illuminated door handles. BMW is very odd sometimes...take away something, add something,,,,penny penching at it's worst sometimes!

I took a few pictures that show the ceiling console lights as well as the lights that are on the underside of the door armrests, above the storage compartments. On my 335i these were on the lower edge of a door trim strip and they seemed to illuminate the door area a bit better.

The "problem" in the X5 is that the panorama roof doesn't allow for a rear ceiling console, which is where BMW might have put the ambient lights. That being said, it seems that they might have been able to put some near the rear interior/map lights, or perhaps near the vents or controls in the rear center console.

All this being said, I like the panorama roof better than I'd like slightly better ambient lighting!
Are those strip orange led lights under the arm rests? I guess older models had just a pin light similiar to the overhead consol lights.
