X5 vs 21" of snow (snow wins)

Huge snow storm today here. My wife came home and got her 328xi stuck when we had around 7" of show. Four hours later manly me took the 2011 X5 out to show I could still get around.

Well -- over 12" of snow by then and X5 bottomed out, stuck. Once I got it out on the roads, thanks to all of the snow it drove more like a boat. I think the old Bridgestone run flats were not happy with all that snow.

These are still your worn all-season Bridgestone Duellers?

If so, it is time for some real winter tires.

Agreed!

I'm switching to the Conti DWS once the howling on the Bridgestones gets too bad. Too lazy to swap and store snow tires.

In hindsight, should have done the Conti's sooner.

Go for the toyo ST II. The only problem is that they don't come in RFT

Specially if you live in Minnesnowtah.

You need to reduce the width of tires on snow or it will be a sleigh. Go smaller wheel size. 19" or lower.

It's the tires. I don't think the Continental DWS are real snow tires, rather a "no-season" tire.

Our BMWs do great in the snow with the snow tires. Both the 325i and X3 plow through fresh snow through the intake grille, and packed snow the height of the wheels is fine too.

DWS = Dry, Wet, Snow, an all season tire. OK in the wet, but not much of a snow tire.

We ran the DWSs on a car and liked them. In the Twin Cities, you only need a real snow tire a few days a year. Roads are well plowed/salted most of the winter.

It's definitely the tires. I had no problems in my X5 with Blizzaks. Same MN blizzard, our 5th largest ever recorded in the metro area!

I saw a LOT of really stuck cars and trucks, but I was more worried about my front air dam than getting stuck lol.
