iPod/iPhone hookup 2011 X5

My 2010 7 Series with iPod capability, required the Y adapter that BMW provided (was in the glove box upon delivery).

My 2011 35d, also is iPod equipped (it's on my window sticker). It did not come with the Y adapter. My salesman told me to just use the white Apple USB plug (as you would use to do an iPhone or iPod update or sync).

I was looking at some 2011 X5s on eBay, and they showed the Y adapter in the center console compartment..being used for iPad/iPhone hookup.

What's the deal? Did the dealer screw me out of a Y adapter, or can I just use, or should I just use the white Apple cable?

Thanks a lot!

They screwed you out of the adaptor. When I got the E92 , that happened to me. Then they wanted to charge me some crazy price for it. Go back and have them give it to you. You cannot fully access your IPod/IPhone without it.

2011 models built since October use the Appl provided cable. The sound is input thru the USB. Older models required the aux port for the sound. Check the build date on the door sticker.

If that's the case, the dealer should still be providing him that Y cable, since he is paying for it.

iPod/USB Adapter (6FL)
This option has also been enhanced with many exciting features.
iPod One-wire integration: No longer will an iPod connection require the “Y-cable”. The original iPod USB cable is all that is required to connect the device to the vehicle. This simplifies the connection by not requiring the aux-input. The music is transferred directly from the iPod digitally to the HiFi system via USB. Therefore as of September, the Y-Cable will no longer be included with iPod/USB Adapter (6FL).
Album Cover Art: The ability to display album cover art will also be included with the iPod/USB Adapter. If cover art is contained in the metadata of the song, it will show on the vehicle display while the song is played.

Thanks for all the replies. I am going to try it this morning, when I take my son to school!

I was going to try it last night, but I am afraid of trying the radio in the garage, while the car is parked. Doesn't it suck, that we have to be so afraid of the battery going bad? I am nervous to even open the door or the trunk, when the engine is not running! When the pedals were installed a few days ago, the driver door was open about 15/20 mins. I was freaking out about the battery. To be safe, I put the X5 on the BMW battery charger...and sure enough, it took over 24!!!! hours to fully show a charged battery. Just 15/20 mins with the driver door opened, pulled the battery down! Oh well...I guess since we know about this, we just have to be sensitive and aware of the issue. Luckily, the car is just SO awesome & everything is so great...we just have to deal with the crappy battery problem. Again, thanks for the iPod/iPhone replies, I'll post the results!

How do you get the metadata to show up? I have a 2011 X5 November build. Ipod works the same with Y cable (given by Dealership although they tole me I didnit need it) or Apple supplied cable.

In order to see album art you must use the apple provided cable. Album art will not work with the y-cable.
