interesting.. I never considered any of my X5's as great handling or fast... considering a x5 4.8 runs the qtr mile in mid 14's, there are quite a few very pedestrian cars that are faster...

and no.. the X5 is a 5 series chassis.

Agree, but she holds pretty well against other SUV's...there are faster ones (and a lot that are lighter) but few that can out handle her...in an era of 300hp minivans and mini suv's you definately need the 50i to ensure drag strip victory...my truck that's a 4x4 2500 with 35" tires and weights a few thousand pounds more will ruin my x5 (13.4 qtr mile) and almost anything just off the line(1.7 60' times)....granted it's not very green nor cool when i do a smokey boosted launch at a stop light so i have to choose my battles wisely.

The x5 is the best handling vehicle i've ever owned, but then again i'm comming from owning several trucks and suv's and never a car....so it's amazing for me....but sure it's a tank coming from a sportscar background.

A kill is a kill and feels good when someone else starts it...granted i try to be responsible, but some people have it comming....

"Apparently the performance and fun factor carried over from my 550 to X5"

You must have a low 'fun factor' threshold.....they are worlds apart.

Not as far apart as you would think. I went from an '08 550i Sport to an '11 X5 50i MSport. The X5 feels taller but has surprising grip and incredible responsiveness in the twisties.

Shouldn't you be over on E46 Fanatics w/ the other teenagers? Worlds apart physically, but until you've driven the, it's strictly uneducated opinion on your part as the OP has owned and driven both.

3.5 < 4.8 and the X is a great handling SAV, even coming from my past and current vehicles. I still wish I would have stepped up to a 4.6 or 4.8, but w/ the single digit temps here lately, it's like a free HP boost to my 4.4

so james - let me get this straight... you don't own either and you're commenting? So what makes your commentary more valid than his?

I don't own either, but between friends and being a BMW mechanic, I've had my hands on just about everything...still waiting to drive a 760iL though - I've got my fingers crossed.

Not only have I driven both, I own both, so I'm speaking from experience. But thanks for your "ignorant" opinion. Plus, it's all in jest.

You must hang out with ARD, another class act on this board.....
