Ok guys. Never mind. Once again my friend is full of shit and so am I. Hey Ard, have you ever heard of Owner Operators ? They subcontract out with large companies like Harbor Transport. But once again , I'm full of hot air. It's amazing how no matter what forum you visit, you'll always have a handful of know it alls who can never be taught anything new.

As for open vs closed car hauling, I shot this pic, (and posted it here on the Board), last summer. We were on I-77 north, near the NC/VA border; there were 3 trailers full of E70s...they did not appear to be making 'local/short haul' deliveries, as we were ~180 miles north of S'burg, SC.

Let's clarify this---the original pic was of an e70 in a snow drift and the joke that someone is waiting for it to be delivered. When you put a deposit down on a car that you have ordered from the plant in SC or (maybe found at another dealer across the country) BMW is not going to ship on open transport if it is long distance when you have purchased the dcar. This pic of the X5s on open trucks are probably PLANT TO DEALER deliveries. And Spartanburg is like 45 miles from NC---to NJ etc that is only like a 10 hour drive. That's not "long haul" . Even here in TX that doesn't even get you across the state.

Kloogy--let's put this in your perspective: you are in San Diego. If you ordered your car from your local dealer and it's in the plant in SC ready to be delivered to you in CA---is your expectation as a paying customer on a $70K car that it will be shipped open air across the country ?

Not trying to arm wrestle on this 'topic', but as I noted in my post w/pic, we saw that 3 truck convoy near Mt Airy, NC, northern NC near the VA border, which is ~190 miles north of S'burg plant. Since there is very little in the way of 'towns' in that area, let alone BMW dlrs, those three trucks were headed north to 'somewhere', a considerable distance from the plant.

Were they going 'cross country'? No idea, and I doubt it, based on most peoples' opins of 'cross country'. My point was that I have seen open haulers full of BMWs many times in our regular trips from western NC, (an hour from the Plant), north to NJ/NY. Thus, all I can deduce is some BMWs are not currently hauled in closed carriers. My guess is that some are, too...I realize TX is bigger, as are several other western states; I've ridden m'cycles across them 6 times on coast to coast trips.

I would guess that BMW has chosen to use open carriers for 'shorter' hauls and use the more expensive closed carriers for longer hauls. I was not arguing with anyone; I simply have seen non-closed carriers, in a more than 'local' delivery situ, and wanted to note that fact.

I hope everyone gets their new BMW delivered in good shape, as they should.

Epacy is an unknown quantity at this point
Poor thing. It never got to experience the love from an owner.

All the diesel guys can relax. Based on the black kidneys, I'd say that is a 35i.

On the car carrier subject. Do you guys remember the closed BMW trailers that had the slogan "We're delivering somebody's baby" written across the trailer? And there was a window at the top of the carrier so you could see one of the cars. That was a pretty cool vehicle.
