Noticed a Screw in my FR RFT

Must have got a screw last night or early this morning since the screw still had a little paint on top. It's in the very center rib which is pretty deep rubber I suppose. TPM is reading the tire is fine and I'm not really sure the screw completely penetrated (butt there's no way to know for sure)

I drove to a busy tire shop, but all the techs were busy so the front counter girl came out to see. She basically told\asked me it's a BMW Runflat right????? I said yes. She says there's nothing we can do since this is a special tire. She then starts talking about its good to replace the tires with regular tires that could be plugged. At this point I brushed her off and left.

I drove to get a haircut and found my barber knows a tire tech that told him I should come by after his manager leaves. Said he could probably patch the tire from the inside, but couldn't plug it due to it being a RFT.

Is there a problem patching the tire or am I better off driving it as is and rely on the RFT?? I didn't get the tire deal when I picked up my X5 cause it was so expensive. I wonder if I can get a tire deal now? Tires are barely over 3 months old with LOTS of tread.

What would you do?

I am no expert when it comes to tires, but of the information I do know about RFT's is the reason they cannot be patched is because after they go flat, the sidewalls actually collapse a little. They are so rigid and because of the stress put on them after air pressure loss, even after being inflated again with a patch, they will not return to their original shape. With that being said, your tire has not gone flat yet so your sidewalls are still good. Have them remove the screw, patch the tire and don't worry about it. Had the screw actually punctured your tire and you had a flat, I would say replace the tire. Hope that helps you out some!

During the process of building my new home, I got at least 2 nails in each tire during the course of about a year. Each time, I took it to discount tire company to be repaired. While they did tell me it was not recommended, they happily repaired the tire free of charge. Never had any issues with them post repair.

Thanks. I haven't lost any tire pressure so I plan to take it to the tire repair shop this evening. I'll have my barber call the tech to make sure it's cool to come by and speak directly with him. Something tells me the front counter girl didn't know what she was talking about and merely trying to make a sale.

There is NOTHING WRONG WITH PATCHING A RUN FLAT!!!!!

it is not a "BMW runflat"... it is a michelin or whatever runflat. Forget what BMW says, they are in the business of selling tires, service and tire warranties!

Michelin approves any method used on any of there radial tires. Call them: 866-866-6605

In the OPs case, it is PERFECT that the tire has not run as a flat, hence the carcass has not been abused, etc. The bigger issue with repair of a runflat is that since people often times show up with a flat tire on which they've driven 50 miles at 75 miles an hour, the internal structure of the tire may have been abused- hence BMW risk management instruct "do not patch".

Zero reason not to patch it. There is no mystery or need to be sneaky...find a shop that is not inhabited by idiots.

Wow...is been a long time since I posted...or feels like it.

#1, I have drive thousands of miles with a nail/screw in the same place as yours - no pressure issue (including driving beyond the 50mph on NYC metro roads.)

#2, You can absolutely have them patched, and last for a long time. I had both rear tires patched at almost the same time, ran'em for 10K more miles.

FYI, my BMW dealer patched them. They're in the business of selling, but when you have a relationship with them, they can understand the line between sales and good salesmanship.

Good Luck.

I had 2 runflats in my E92 and E60 patched. Don't listen to the vultures who want to shake you down.

Just got back. The screw wasn't long enough to require a patch. What upsets me most is the front desk guy wanted to charge me $45 to patch it. I asked why it was so much and he said it's due to my tire size and insurance if they damage the tire or wheel. WTF!! Luckily, the tech was honest and said it was fine.
