To put a film of filter oil on the MAF sensor skewing the readings?

I thought I would leave it open ended
  • Yes, you could screw up the MAF with too much oil.
  • You could also let more dirt in, requiring more frequent oil changes
  • You could also have the joy of changing it more often, since it doesn't hold as much dirt
  • You could not impact the intake restriction in any meaningful way
  • You could get to put a K&N decal on your rear window like the racers have
I am sure there are more.

Doesn't BMW provide free maintenance in the US for four years, ie for two more years for the OP's vehicle? Get a free filter from BMW when the old one is dirty.

Hi Everyone...K/B here...

Here's what I learned...

K&N will mess with the engine (ie, more dirt, oils from the filters, etc.)
Meister sounds great, but at 2K+, with minimal, if any gains, the cost out weighs the benefits, including sound.
Magna is great, no drone at 6th gear on highway, cost effective...

Again, personal preference, and these are all IMHO. Good luck with what ever you choose, and

To hear some sound clips, look at my posts on Mods and exhausts...

I agree I like the magna as well but I actually just took my magna and put some knockoffs on with glass pack resonators. I prefer the sound now as I think it sounds a little more throaty.

ShantF1 is an unknown quantity at this point
How will K&N mess up my engine? Because I want to install one. I have a 2009 BMW X5 48i with Sport package (with adaptive drive).

I put one on an Expedition and the oil on K&N filter got on the mass air flow sensor and the SUV did not run properly.

If it is an oiled filter, it can be over oiled and then the oil contaminates the MAF sensor. The filtering efficiency depends on the amount of dirt in it, and the amount of oil. There is no magic gain to it.

If it is a dry K&N filter, then what is the point? Remove a free BMW filter, and pay for a cheap K&N filter.

Filters have almost no pressure drop across them. There is no logic to putting one on to reduce backpressure. There are independent tests available if you want to see the numbers, I have posted them on here before. Do a search.
