2011 35i tailpipe question/concern

Does anyone know why the 2011 35i doesn't seem to make much use of the right tailpipe? I notice when I start it up in the morning that nearly all of the steam/exhaust is coming out of the left tailpipe.

Also, I'm starting to get a black stain on the painted bumper piece that extends under the left exhaust tip. Anyone else experiencing this?

Only one tailpipe works, until it's under heavy throttle. Then the flapper opens up and the second one becomes functional.

Yes you are fine. BMW uses a vacuum controled valve to open the other tip up during heavier acceleration to reduce backpressure. It also increases the exhaust note. It is design to be quiet while putzing around, and when you get on it it opens both up to allow to motor to breath better and produce a louder exhuast note. If you want the exhaust to be louder and both to be used all the time there are instructions on E90post on how to accomplish this, or you could just Google it.

That is typically caused by heavy acceleration. During full throttle acceration, the motor burns oil (most cars I've seen do this not just BMW's). Those stains are the result of the burnt oil coming out of the tailpipe and covering the bumper. It can easily be washed off, but that would be my guess as to what is occuring

thanks for the info......when you say both exhaust to be used and louder does it mean more gas it will consume

Not at all. It will not affect your fuel consumption in any way.

An aftermarket exhaust sure has that effect. I always want to puch it just to hear it.
