I believe you need to check the "dynamic routing" as an option in the nav menu. I know that my X5 will change my route if there is traffic issues on my nav. This happens when I have a destination selected. I cannot tell you the steps cause I cannot check the X because it has been at BMW for the last 39 days so I forget how its done. Check the manual for dynamic routing, this may answer your question.

I'm not 100% clear on how this works, but I'll give it a stab..
So it does NOT pop up and tell you there's traffic. The icon just turns RED. If there is a WRECK - and not just slow traffic, lane closure, etc. - and you have Dynamic Routing turned on, it will reroute. Sometimes. I came across a set of selections ON the "traffic screen" the other day that I hadn't seen before and one of them was to route around it. I don't remember seeing these selections before, and wondering how in the devil do I make it reroute. It seems inconsistent, illogical or maybe I don't get it. It has rerouted before, but it seems to like to tell me "xx miles left to detour" without actually detouring. Kind of frustrating. |

I agree that it is inconsistent, but as noted, turn on dynamic routing. The route preference (fastest, most efficient, shortest) may also make a difference. My biggest gripes are Charlotte always has traffic warnings so I tend to ignore the red triangle. Also, when it reroutes, it thinks you no longer have a traffic issue and displays no red triangle to warn of an issue. I have driven straight into a mess until it pops up, no detour possible.
Lesson: Always watch your arrow display or instructions on the HUD.

I understand about the Dynamic routing part. That makes sense. The problem with that... is that if you have dynamic routing on always... then you dont even know when you are being re-routed and what the original route would have been. The red triangle wont turn red and you wont know where the traffic would have been if you still want an option of going that way. The old system... with a red triangle... it would pop up a few miles before and tell you that you have a traffic disruption on your route and gave you AN OPTION for selecting a detour. I dont see that option here when you select the red triangle and see what the traffic is. Does anyone else have any ideas? BMW are you listening?
