About 2-3 times since last August, neither the top view or rear view turn on. Twice was when I pressed the button to show them off. The most recent time, cycling drive/reverse fixed it, IIRC. In all cases it worked the next time I needed it.

When I took my '11 35d in for it's first oil change this past Friday, I told my SA that my backup camera had been acting up (cuts in and out and gets all 'squiggly' sometimes, then will be just fine). They had to keep it over the weekend to fix it.

When I picked it up today he said that there had been a service advisory out on the e70 backup cameras (don't know if it was all e70s, just 35ds, '11s, or what, but it applied to my car). Said something about the wiring harness picking up interference and they had to put more shielding around the harness.

You should call your SA to find out if you are affected by the same service advisory.

If you take it in, I advise you to take out your cargo cover. They managed to break mine while they worked on the camera (the RH bracket actually, it won't click in anymore). I'm glad I figured it out before I left the lot so I wouldn't have to go back twice! He has to order the part, sheesh.

Hell on my pre HD based Idrive systems, the back up camera was almost worthless. By the time I stated the car and began to back up, the "BMW" was still on the idrive.

Yes, happened a few times years ago. Mine is a 2009 X5 35d as well. It was under warranty at the time and the dealer couldn't reproduce the problem (go figure). No issues since.
