I have posted before, about how surprisingly small the E70 is relative to its quite large exterior dims. I loaded my daughter's college dorm room belongings last week into an otherwise empty E70 (and the two of us of course). The stuff BARELY fit and I had zero view out the inside mirror. In a few days she will be loading almost all of this stuff into her 2009 VW Rabbit (Golf). She says she is sure it will fit, having done it before, more or less.

Agree on the "we can get by with almost anything" attitude. I recall a trip we took years ago in our '91 Maxima (a much smaller car then). Two kids (one in car seat), mother-in-law, wife and self. 2000 miles round trip including beach paraphernalia (noodles, blankets, boogie boards and such), 17 days, three destinations. Now, I can't imagine how we did it.

I do think the 'lighter' engineering of cars is true. Much of it driven by mileage needs and cost-cutting. Some of it by advanced tech. But then to offset it we have the bloat of all the electronics (I'd suppose they weigh very little but can't be sure), all the motorized everything.

I still do a double-take on how large the E70 body is when I go to the garage for something. Then if/when I open the trunk I do another about how small it is.

My thoughts exactly...

If the X5 gets any bigger I won't be buying another one. I don't need to be driving a barge

Exactly the reason I avoided the Q7 ... felt like it should come with flashing red lights and a stop sign that folds out. That said, I was pretty surpised to find out my golf clubs will not laterally fit in the back of the X5 - the smaller (external dimensions) Jeep GC swallows 4 sets no problem side to side.

I don't want the outside any bigger that's for sure, I'm already adjusting to the change from the E53 to this and I think my E53 was more nimble in day to day driving. But the stock 18" 's could be contributing to that.

I also liked that my rear seats reclined in the E53 but that's apparently gone in this. The rear trunk space seems larger to me. When we traveled with 4 people in the E53 we put the Thule Roof box (we've named it the 'coffin') on the top and put overflow there. Prolly do the same with the E70.

If you get the 3rd row option the rear seats recline and move back a little too.

honestly, i wish my schlong were bigger, but given the fact that i don't quite get the use out of it as i would and didn't in my youth i suppose my 2008 E70 X5 is just about right. buy a minivan or quit your bitchin'.
