I want be to be able to take four adults and their associated stuff camping, hiking, or skiing. I want to be able to do it in fast, fun-to-drive, luxury.

The rest of the time I want to be able to drive a vehicle that handles well in the rain of the northwest, can get past idiot Prius drivers stuck in the snow, and I can occasionally fill with stuff from Home Depot or Costco.

My X6 did all this fairly well, apart from the adults and stuff (anyone over 5'8" can't sit in the back, skis don't really fit anywhere) and I just ordered an X5 to overcome that.

If I'd wanted a behemoth, I'd have bought a Suburban - but it kinda fails on the fun level. The X5 is a huge car.... back home in the UK a family of four and a dog would go on a week vacation in a Focus. How much more space can anyone possibly need?!

You might want to try a test packing for the camping -- with the back seat up the cargo space is rather limited, e.g., you might need to use a top box on the roof.

LOL - yeah, the camping part is easy, until I add the coolers full of beer and wine ;p

The challenge I always had with the X6 was the fact that there were no roof rails, and the slope of the trunk lid reduced the available space. This meant that if I wanted to take multiple skiers/boarders, I had to fold half the back seat (the ski bag is largely useless) which then meant I had only three seats.

The backward slant of the 2nd row seats makes the cargo space less usable for rigid things like coolers or boxes. I find packing the soft stuff towards the front maximizes use of the space.

I love that the 2nd row can be moved back! There is terrific legroom for the 2nd row as a result. That worth getting the 3rd row all by itself!
