refused delivery

I was at the dealership today to take delivery of a 2012 X5 when during the car inspection I noticed a dent on the rear bumper. I refused to take delivery.

The dealer has offered to replace the entire bumper which I cringed at. I'm skeptical they can repair it because the dent crosses two ridges and the paint is etched. I couldn't take a clear picture because the lighting in their garage was poor.

So I am contemplating just asking them to re-order the car. Anyone with similar experiences? What did you end up doing? And what incentives did the dealer offer you?

If this happened before it went to VPC they would have repaired it and you would have never known. It seems like a minor problem. I would let them fix it and then see if they did a good job. If they did not do a good job then I would consider ordering another.

I have done this few times. When I went to pick-up the car, I noticed swirls on the paint as if it has been run through some cheap car wash. I refused the delivery. Ordered a new car.

Another time the car came with different wheels than what I wanted. Dealer did not want to just change wheels. Cancelled the order and placed order again.

They should also give you a loaner till you get the new car. They may not give you, as not all dealers are that nice, but does not hurt to ask.

This is spot on advice.

HOWEVER, do not take possession of the car until they repair it. No "take the car and then we'll fix it at your convenience"

Let them order a new bumper skin and repaint it- I'd have ZERO issues with this as it will be undetectable, and the odds are you'll nick a bumper soon enough.

Oh, and get a loaner until the car is delivered, if you need one.

On my old '01 X5 there was a scuff on the front bumper. They fixed it and was fine. As mentioned let them attempt to fix it before you take delivery.

The fact that it's passed their quality control before being released like that is unacceptable. The fact that now you are forced to wait and it was delivered to you in that condition should entitle you to some compensation. I just started a thread on my paint defect, much worst than yours but I took delivery already

To add my experience, the day of delivery the sales staff contacted me and told me the front bumper cover had substantial damage. They offered of course to have it resprayed and I refused the vehicle. I did mention that I would except the vehicle only if they provided a factory painted bumper cover. They contacted Germany and said it was approved. Weeks later I was contacted and told it was now refused. They instead ordered another vehicle and allowed me to change the bumper cover myself.

I am particular about who touches my vehicles and I thought that was above and beyond what a good dealer should do. They even delivered the doner vehicle to my shop. Very cool. Sadly however there is probably a 2011 Z4 out there somewhere with a resprayed bumper cover.....

Let them fix it before delivery and if it is ok, accept it. I had scratches in the paint on drivers door and a bad window tint job at delivery. They fixed both perfectly and did not charge me for the window tint as compensation for my disappointment and trouble.

I will add: If it was a metal body panel that required repainting an already painted panel or adding clearcoating to an adjacent panel I would refuse the car. Yes, paint happens, but it isn't my job to make their lives easier.... a bumper cover is, as I said, undetectable.

There's a dude bitching and moaning on the Z4 thread about bad paint on the bumper, I will gladly give him your info, so that you can get together and talk about things.
