35d Bucks, Stalls, and Dies
Purchased a fully loaded all packages and active handling 2009 35d with 52k a week ago and drove it 400 miles home. Ran great 29 mpg . One week later with the inlaws in the car, went 3 blocks and it died. Started back up, put it in drive and it died again. After letting it sit was able to drive it home but it bucked violently several times on the way home. Going in on Monday - hope it isn't to expensive since it is just out of warranty.

What did the PPI (pre purchase inspection) show?
Brave man- I am a pretty decent mechanic and I wouldn't acquire one without a warranty.... |

It could be possible that the fuel pump was never replaced under the huge recall that started last year. Recalls are free, even after a warranty is up, so let's hope it's that. It is always a good idea to take a car that is purchase used and have a factory dealership make sure all the recalls are up to date and done.

Was there a recall on the diesel fuel pump? I thought it was just the gasoline engine.

Contact Us: Voluntary Recall - BMW North America
It looks like it was just the gasoline engine, my mistake, but it certainly does sound like intermittent fuel pump behavior.

The vehicle history I have doesn't specifically mention a fuel filter unless it was part of the regularly scheduled maintenance. Hopefully tomorrow will bring some good answers as to what is going on. I put nearly 600 miles on it since purchasing it so I doubt the selling dealer had anything to do with the failure - just not lucky lately. The X5 was to replace my carelessly totaled car.

No one accidentally put gasoline in it, did they?

Sure sounds like a fuel problem. Dirty fuel, water in the fuel, or gasoline in the fuel are the things I would be looking for.
