Week in review 2011 X5 35d

Transitioned from e53 4.4 to e70 35d.

Dealer experience
CA's a friend of mine. It's his livelihood, so I wasn't looking for him to give away the car. Time's important to me so I didn't want to go back and forth. Told him what I wanted, and we agreed on the price first go around. Everything else was pretty generic and straight forward. Might as well be buying a Honda. I was ok with that. Ordered Memorial Day weekend, took delivery 6/25.

Delivery
All the paperworks were prepped. Took 5 mins to sign everything with the finance guy. They did manage to sell me the wheel/tires insurance. I have no experience with RFTs, and I do live in NYC. I'd bent my 22"s on a few occasions, so extra $30/month...might as well. Car's super clean and I commented it'll never be this clean ever again. Took about an hour to go through the car with my friend. Wife's happy and my son napped the entire car ride home. The rear climate + sunshades kept him nice and comfy.

Driving experience
CA advised 500miles for the break in, so I was taking it easy. The engine is everything as advertised. Love the power + torque, and it's comparable to the v8. Enough's already been said about it (do a search), and I concur. I opted to not get the sports package + adaptive drive. There's body roll, and it's not as sure footed as my e53, but it's ok to me. I'd never thought about how a steering wheel will affect driving experience, but I do miss the M steering wheel on the e53. The size, the material, the feel. The e70 base steering wheel just doesn't feel as "engaging". Steering is also on the lighter side compare to my e53, so the perception is a bit lacking in road feel. Not sure how much of that would change with the SP or AD. RFTs seem ok. The cabin's fairly insulated and quiet, and the e53 was pretty noisy, so it's an improvement. Went past 500 miles last night and I pushed it a bit on the highway. Again, lovely engine. There's the diesel "chatter", but hardly noticeable at speed and it doesn't bother me either which way.

Interior is functional. Material is ok. Not as supple and "modern" as say the new RR or Porsche. It's the drive comfort and function that matter more to me anyway and i don't spend my time looking around the cabin while driving.

Options
Comfort Seats - glad I got them. I've a bad lower back, and it offers a lot of support. Still trying to find the sweet spot, but so far so good. I wanted to try the active ventilated seat, but it's a shame BMW limits the color choices on that. I got the Cinnamon Brown leather with Bamboo trim btw.

Set headlights and climate to auto, and don't have to think about them.

The "adaptive 1 fog light" thing was interesting, as i'd had a few ppl coming up to my new car telling me i've a fog light out. I had no idea about it. Giving BMW is over the top with diagnostics, i'd had gotten some alert if a bulb's out. Doing some research online showed this is normal.

Keyfob memory and separate settings for wifey

Sliding rear seat because i've 3rd row seating

iDrive - it's my 1st experience with it, and so far, it's been pretty intuitive. No complaints yet.

Nav - still building relationship and trust with the Nav lady, especially with the dynamic guidance with real time traffic. Interface is not bad, and certainly a huge improvement from the e53.

Side, top, rear cameras - didn't have them before and I parked just fine. Just extra assurances, and more for the wife.

Premium sound - as you can see, I had an after market system installed on the e53. MB quarts, JL subs, Pheonix gold amps. Decent components. So this was one area I really needed to manage my own expectations. It is not bad. People need to realize, most of the problem, it's the source, rather than the equipment that's the limiting factor. Loud also <> quality. Pop in an original CD, play with the EQ, and it's not half bad. Ipod connection is pretty seemless. Sirius sound quality is awful. Content is decent though.

I really like the presets/touch sensitive buttons. Based on some tips on here, I programmed important phone #, Nav destinations, and my fav - nearest diesel gas station.

Speaking of gas station, the projected range prior to my 1st fill up was around 550miles. After fill up, the projected range was 620miles. I know there's some algorithm in figuring that out based on recent driving conditions. Either case, coming from the thirsty 4.4, this puts a smile on my face, and it's a big reason why we went with the diesel.

With AW, it'll be a challenge keeping her clean especially living in Manhattan. Looking at Optimum no Rinse. Will give a review on that later.

Overall, very happy. Most of the above are not diesel specific, and i'll say it again, the engine and efficiency really shine. Miss my e53, but a bit less everyday.

Congratulations on the new ride. That is a serious system you had in your E53. Any intentions of doing the same to the E70?

Very cool, congrats. Seems like you got a perfect car for your use.

If you want to add some cool extra features talk to David at [email protected]. Spoke to him a few days ago and the pricing for everything he offers to code this car is just amazing. Undetectable to the dealer and he recodes for free if BMW does any software updates that clear his coding.

Thanks.

I'd like to, but no. It's a lease, and it is the family car. Until we've the space/parking for "my" car, customization is on hold. It's a main reason why we got the new e70. The sub box vs. wife's constant over packing. It's a losing battle.

White really is easy to keep clean. Counter intuitive, but much better than black!

Enjoy-

Still drive it. It's been great. Good engine and gas mileage. Only 28k miles and we wound up buying it off lease since it had no issues and we know the service history. I got extended warranty thru dealer for some additional peace of mind. Good luck with your search. Pm me if you have further questions.
