Auto-Trans Fluid Change ..... The Saga Begins

i'm well past the "should i" stage so i thought i would share the experience so far.

dropped my '08 4.8 at my indy's shop today. flush all diffs and change trans fluid. 76k miles. i asked for the trans filter to be changed also.

so he calls me about 4 and asks "are you sitting down". turns out the transmission filter and pan are one piece of plastic. his cost $300. but at least that includes the gasket. we are both simply amazed and not in the least amused by this. add in the fluid at $40 a liter and i might need to rob a bank to change out my trans fluid.

more to come as it unfolds.

if i don't laugh about this i might just be driven to tears..............

Huh. Probably only sell 6 a year....

IMO change the fluid every 40k and that screen thing is fine as is. I would be curious for a description of what was in it, and/or pictures ....

Thx!

Stay tuned. A couple of suppliers have been testing plastic engine oil pans with lifetime filters built into them. Not sure when/if we will see them in production.

You can get the filter/pan for a lot less than $300:
Search - RM European Auto Parts

Good news.

I haven't been on BimmerFest in quite some time. I was in the first wave of defectees, the 6er group if you recall. Another bunch landed on e60.net to escape.

Geez, is BMW deliberately trying to make it harder and less cost-effective to service and maintain our own cars?

apparently this is a known issue but not worthy of a TSB yet. it is an age issue rather than mileage. over time the heat from the tranny causes the pan to warp. in my case 3.5 years or so.
