Boat towing

Just wondering. Any of you tow and launch your boats with the OEM trailer wiring harness? Do you have to disconnect it from the trailer before launching the boat. Just wondering with all these complicated electronics, might make sense not to risk a short or something from submerging the trailer electrics.

Definitely. Always disconnect the trailer lights before launching.

No matter the vehicle standard operating procedure is to disconnect before launch to avoid hot trailer bulbs interacting with cold lake water

Yeah the LEDs prolly wont give a problem like the old style bulbs.
Cant speak from technical knowledge as to the possibility of shorting or damaging the tow vehicles electrics. Better safe than sorry?

I have submersible LEDs on my trailer, I haven't disconnected the harness yet. I have surge brakes, so I'd have to lock out the brake solenoid manually if I disconnected the harness

I just about went off the road when I saw this. It's a 3-series wagon.

E46 can tow 1600 kg/3500 lbs with trailer brakes according to BMW. Same as the X3, which is built on the E46 platform. E90 went to 1700 kg/3700 lbs. Only challenge will be finding the correct hitch in North America. BMW sell a lot of factory hitches in Europe.

Doesn't mean you *should* though.

If it is within the weight limit, why not?

Same as my trip through the Rockies last year, in winter. Fully loaded vehicle and trailer. X3 on the E46 platform. It did great.

Superduty and Dodge Cummins pickups are great, but are massive overkill for most towing.
