I had the Hak R (non SUV) on my E39 M5 for 4 winters in Maine. They were brilliant in the snow and ice. However, they sucked the fun out of driving the car on clear pavement. Soft sidewall and thick tread made it feel like the car was always a tenth of a second behind what I asked it to do, and I was never able to enjoy cornering without wondering if the tires were going to launch me into the weeds. If you have a lot of snow/ice on the road most of the winter it would be a good choice. For NYC, you may want to consider more of a performance snow that gives you better dry road manners. I am considering the Nokian WR G2. It has the severe service emblem, but is marketed as an all-season tire. I had a couple of sets of the WR (its predecessor) on the wife's allroad and it was almost as good as a dedicated snow, but was pretty reasonable year round. It still had soft sidewalls though. HTH.

I would look at the Pirelli Ice & Snows. Impressive on snow & ice and little sacrifice on dry pavement too.

Thanks for the feedback. I commute about 60 miles each day. But, weekends in VT so I'm looking for the best of both worlds if it exists.

I run 20 in Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow in Boston with frequent tips to Maine. Great grip in bad weather and very very good performance in dry conditions.
